the pen is mightier than the word

What if I told you I could make you a superstar in the eyes of your friends, family and lovers? That two common household items could completely change the dynamic of your relationships? Your reputation? Your life? What if I told you to give me a pack of Turkish Royals before I go on? No you shut up.
The secret to making an amazing impression on people, endearing yourself to them and improving yourself in the process?
Should cost you less than $3.
All you need? A pen and a small, pocket sized notebook. These two items should be on your person, or close by, at all times.
Why? To jot down the ideas, suggestions and memorable comments of the people in your life. The impact of this simple act can’t be overstated.
I stumbled upon this phenomenon by accident, during my days as an “aspiring pick up artist” (gag!). One of the things the “gurus” suggested was to bring a pen and paper with you to the bars. They were used for routines, magic tricks, and other embarrassing techniques aimed at “hooking the attention” of the tipsy tramps that were your targets for the evening.
Few and far between were the times I used the pen and paper for the purpose intended. I did, however, start using it for a far greater purpose; keeping track of interesting songs, movies, and ideas we discussed that I wanted to remember or investigate further.
The first time I did it, and almost every time since, the reaction has been the same. Stunned, wide-eyed delight. Why? The answer is simple. Simply sad that is. Most people feel, rightfully so based on their experiences, that their opinions don’t really matter. How many times have you spent 15 minutes excitedly evangelizing a favorite book, song or movie only to be met with a blank stare, or a halfhearted “yeah, I’ll uh, have to check that out..”? If you’re like most people, it happens all the time.
On the other hand, how often has someone been so genuinely interested in your ideas that they broke out a notepad and started scribbling away, newspaper-reporter-on-the-street style? Probably never.
Having your thoughts transcribed is nearly narcotic in its power. It makes you feel important. Interesting. Alive. People who think your knowledge is indispensable in their world? Soon become indispensable in yours.
