r.i.p: polar bear snuff

December 10, 2007 by cash

It’s not often that the internet pisses me off, but when it does, it REALLY does.  Doing research into over-the-counter stimulants led me to a bizarre description of perhaps the strangest legal upper ever;

Polar Bear is a gorgeous white powder that you snort, sniff demurely or pack into your sinuses like cotton wadding. Going straight through your mucus membranes, Polar Bear is an instant rush.

An unlike ‘the other white powder’ I’m sure none of you are familiar with, Polar Bear Snuff isn’t damaging to your nostrils:

All you’ll find in the powder is “caffeine crystals, kava kava, red kirin, ginseng, oil of clove and wintergreen, natural menthol crystals.” The wintergreen and menthol really opened up everyone’s sinuses, but about half of our volunteers found the taste of Polar Bear unpleasant at the back of their throats. Most went back for seconds, however.

The review left me racing to google in an effort to order Polar Bear Snuff for a proper review.  It took all of about 60 seconds to realize two things;

  1. The article reviewing it was from 1996.
  2. Polar Bear Snuff is no longer on the market

Damn you internet and your teasing ‘historical archive of everything awesome that the government probably deemed too fun to keep on the market’ ways.

Hmpf.

vice. life. the naughty. the nice.

    Yes, I know, I found the same website and I found the same “nothing” on google except for you little blog here. I know that over a year separates our posts, but I want to thank you for posting and clarifying this anyway. But that must’ve been some good stuff back in 1996….Ahhh, the good ole days.

    Wow…I haven’t heard about Planet K in such a long time…ah the joys of being 10 years old and getting a pen where you see a nekkid lady when you press on the button.

    Wow, talk about disappointing! I too raced to the local drug store to pick up some of this magical stuff…only to find out that the article was beyond ancient and polar bear snuff has long gone. Is it available anywhere?? It sounds sweet!

    I heard about Polar Bear Snuff from an Austin ex patriot. I’m in town currently and decided to hunt it down. Here are some of the places I checked:

    Planet K: Doesn’t have it. Hasn’t had it for “three or four months” and doesn’t know when (if ever) they will be getting it again.

    Gas Pipe (both locations): They tried to sell me tobacco snuff before we figured out they had never stocked, much less heard of anything called “polar bear snuff”

    Oat Willies (both locations): One location said they “were out” and the other said “to my understanding, we can no longer get it”. I asked if they knew why. They said the didn’t. Additionally, the girl I talked to on the phone at the E. Oltorf location sounded like a complete bitch who was obviously annoyed that a costumer had the nerve to call her place of employment and waste her precious time. I hope she chokes on the gum it sounded like she was chewing.

    BC Smoke Shop: “Never heard of it”.

    Pipes Plus: “Is that like a tobacco snuff?” “No, it’s like a powdered energy drink that you snort” “We don’t have it”.

    SmoKo Smokeshop: “I heard of it but sorry we don’t carry it”

    And that about rounds out the head shops I’m aware of in Austin. This is all accurate as of November 9th, 2009.

    I hope you have better luck than me. I am flabbergasted at the lack of information on this product anywhere. I would really like to know who manufactures it so I could contact them directly. I’m beginning to think this whole thing is just a local urban myth…

    Austin. You have failed me.
