daily cashfirmations
I have a love/hate relationship with the concept of “daily affirmations”. On the one hand, they’re a good way of injecting positivity into your train of thought. On the other? Most people don’t understand how they work, so they’ll never get to reap the rewards of saying them. A daily affirmation is a reminder of something good in your life, not a catalyst for creating something good in your life. If you don’t already truly believe whatever ‘affirmation’ you’re saying? You’re wasting your time and breath.
Lucky for me, I have plenty of core beliefs that are “Daily Cashfirmation” worthy. Back when TGOC was knee high to a grasshopper, I shared one that I’ve been using ever since (see here). It’s good, but its usefulness is somewhat limited. It’s a reminder. Nothing more, nothing less.
I’ve written a new one that will work not only in that regard, but also as an excellent retort to a common conversational exchange in Cash Life.
I call this exchange “The Scenario”. It’s been played out more times than I can count, and it has to do with Read more

This has been all over the world wide webs, but bears repeating here. Regardless of your religious slant, I think everyone can agree Pat Robertson is an idiot. His comments to the press about how Haiti’s disaster was the result of a deal they made with the devil were as sickening as they were laughable.
Thankfully, ol’ stretch himself wrote a letter in response. Read more
the cashese zodiac

A few days into the new year, an inspiring text from my good friend and knower Zach:
“2010: Year of the Cash”.
Sounds about right. Still, my dislike of even numbers made me a bit reserved about the months ahead. I decided to get a second opinion. From another trusted source. Some random Asian market in Philadelphia, to be precise. Well, from their online Chinese zodiac calculator anyway.
I’ve always been a fan of the western zodiac. It’s hard not to be when Read more
cash’s d.i.y. therapy
January 23, 2010 by cash · Leave a Comment

The prospect of seeing a therapist has always intrigued me. By “intrigued” I should say “fascinated”. I should also say “freaked”. As in “me the fuck out”.
Fascinated and freaked. In equal doses.
What will they tell me I don’t already know?
Can I trust them to keep my secrets?
How quickly can they write a prescription for Adderall?
Most likely, these questions will go unanswered (quite sadly, regarding the third). My paranoia will probably overrule my curiosity indefinitely. Still, I find myself somewhat envious of those who do get to spend time on a therapist’s couch.
Think about it. 50 minutes a week spent talking about what’s important. To you. What’s bothering you. Inspiring you. Limiting you. Talking, mind you, to someone who’s actually listening. Taking notes. Providing feedback, not judgment (or even advice, necessarily). I’d reckon it would be hella cathartic. Soothing. Beneficial. In ways I can’t even comprehend, I’m sure.
So what’s a psychiatrist-adverse, yet constantly curious Cash to do?
Invent my own.

nouvelle vague 3 review
January 21, 2010 by cash · Leave a Comment
French art-house savants Nouvelle Vague have a truly bizarre talent; transforming dearly loved (yet played to death) indie/alternative hits into something entirely new. They’re a combination Magic-8-Ball + Mood-Ring for “post modern music” ex-pats everywhere. On their latest album “3″, NV have a new trick up their sleves; duets with many of the original artists.
From an adorable, bossanova infused take on Read more
lucid dream vs lucid life
I’m extremely lucky. In a lot of ways. A. Lot. One of the strangest is also one of the most satisfying. I dream. In full color. Dolby digital, surround sound. Almost every night. I remember these dreams. They run the gammut from perversely sexual to mind numbingly blasé. A lot of people do this, I’m sure. The difference? What makes me so lucky?
Over the last five years or so, I haven’t been scared during a dream.
Not once.
Not when I was dangling from a fraying rope over a murky lagoon filled with circling sharks (and strangly, a killer whale). Not when some lunatic weilding two machetes tried to make a house call at my place. Not when standing on the rooftop ledge of a Las Vegas casino. Before jumping off. Into a waiting helicopter.
I’m never scared. For one and only one reason. Read more
even better than the real thing: depeche mode “martyr”

New feature on TGOC, just for you. “Even Better Than The Real Thing”. Here I’ll highlight a cover version / remix / bootleg of a song that’s even better than the original its based on. Listen up son, ya just might learn sumthin.
Although I’ve been lukewarm on the majority of Depeche Mode’s recent work (Sounds of The Universe didn’t even rate a review here), I’m still a sucker for reworked versions of the classics. Read more
it ain’t ‘pall mall’, y’all

Introducing a brand new cliche; “frugality is the father of discovery”. A recent visit to 7-11 to get smokes is a perfect example. Debating buying my beloved Camel Turkish Royals or having enough money to take the light rail to see my parents, I noticed “Pall Mall” cigarettes were on sale. I’d never tried Pall Mall, so I got two packs; Red and Blue. Wow. Ladies and Gentlemen, Read more
editors - in this light and on this evening - review
January 16, 2010 by cash · Leave a Comment
Longtime hipster sweethearts Editors are back with “In This Light And On This Evening”; a brooding, heartfelt dive down the rabbit hole of synth infused gothtronica. ITLAOTE is a somewhat brave departure for the multi-platinum British band. Leaving behind the tightly wound, indie-rock anthems that brought them to fame with such hits as “Munich” and “Blood”, the new disc is equal parts gloomy and gorgeous.
The title track finds Tom Smith’s voice rumbling in a subterranean pitch that brings to mind Read more
passive aggressive jillian.. um ‘notes’
January 15, 2010 by cash · 2 Comments
The only thing better than “Passive Aggressive Notes” to kill some time and find some laughs? A very personal PAN, written by a dear friend. Longtime TGOC reader, queen supreme of video editing and dead-pan humorist extrordinaire Jillian sends along this classic piece.
Location: The refridgerator in the break room at a local television station where she works.
Via email, to Cash: “I made my own PA note today. Someone stole and destroyed a cupcake I made and brought in.”
Obviously, the hungry hungry hippo in question didn’t know who they were dealing with. Until, that is, they returned to the scene of the crime and found Jillian’s passive aggressive thank you note:

Well played, Ms. Well played. Tailor Swift would be proud. Cash already is.
