A recent beer soaked conversation at City O’ City found me receiving this wonderful accolade:
“You’re not the devil. You’re the devil’s billboard.”
meta motivations - stop the suffering, save your life

People suck. Truly. Some more than others. Some, hardly at all (where’d I put that mirror?). One thing almost everyone sucks at is guessing the reason other people do things. Especially bad things. Things that hurt us. Things we can’t possibly conceive of doing ourselves. Playing this guessing game is a lot like russian roulette. In reverse. 5 bullets, one empty chamber. Feeling lucky? Me either. This is why I’m gonna make a small suggestion that will save you more pain and suffering than you can possibly imagine.
Stop trying. To understand. Why people do. What they do.
Ta-da, soul saved. Leave a pack of Turkish Royals for me on your way out.
What? You want an explanation? Fine, make it two packs on your way out.
People are slaves. All people. Your people. You. Let’s think about that Dr. Pepper jingle from awhile ago; “I’m a slave, you’re a slave, wouldn’t ya like to be a slavey too?”. Probably, not. But ya still are. You’re a slave to your motivations. They come in two flavors, Read more
muse - can’t take my eyes off you

Two thrilling discoveries this past weekend. First? Imeem (see here) finally features music by Muse. Up to this point, the Muse tracks have been resigned to positively horrible bootleg ‘recordings’ that would turn off even the most devout Bellamy-o-phile. Second? One of the newly featured tracks is a cover of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”. I’m a sucker for Read more
pessimists suck - bjork edition

I have a problem with pessimists. Mainly, it’s this: They’re wrong. I’m right. Positivity is potential personified. Read uh, any post on this site for an example. My little bjorkshire terrier is usually a rather upbeat icelandic minx. I adore this about her. One huge mis-step (besides the entire Medulla album, save “Desired Constellation”)? Her work in “Dancer In The Dark”. The movie is perhaps Read more

control your intake: booze + palahniuk edition
I’m about to say something you never thought you’d hear me say. ”Easy on the booze, cowboys and cowgirls.” Ha. Not really. At least not ‘in general’. I’m talking about boozing and movies. One thing my group of friends is well known for is heading to the cineplex with bulging flasks a blazing. This can prove very helpful when Read more
tattoos: make up doesn’t break up

The other day, a strange sight. Smoking away in my 16th street nicotine niche, a well dressed, fit, young secretary type walks into view. Blonde, walking down the street with a friend, she had good energy, a beaming smile, and very expensive heels. As she came closer, I noticed she had something else. This seemingly normal businesswoman had a Read more
interview your peeps, invigorate your life

I spend a lot of time studying people. People I like. Especially people who have awesome traits I don’t quite understand. Traits that draw me to them. Intrigue me about them. I have a friend who definitely fits this category. He’s what you might call ‘hyper-curious’. When I’m having a conversation with him, and bring up a topic he’s not too familiar with, he switches into what can only be called ‘interview mode’. Every facet of the subject is asked about, clarified, and explored down every tangential path you can imagine. What in my mind should have been a 5 minute discussion quickly turns into a 45 minute lesson. For him.
At first, this took some getting used to. It was actually frustrating trying to explain something because I was met with a constant-I do mean constant- barrage of questions. With every answered query however, his enthusiasm grew. There were light bulbs flashing above his head. He truly wanted to understand. To learn something. He wasn’t waiting for Read more
volunteer work that doesn’t suck
September 10, 2009 by cash · 4 Comments
I’ve done volunteer work exactly twice. The first time, I spent a (seemingly endless) Saturday afternoon in a cramped, windowless prison at the Red Cross offices stuffing envelopes after 9/11. The second time, I spent a day helping build a house with Habitat for Humanity. Anyone who knows me should see the side-splitting humor apparent in this endeavor.
“So this long stick with the metal on it, what’s this called again?”
“A hammer.”
“Ooooh.”
In both cases, I knew I was doing good, but never got Read more

I used to be a devout anti-socializer. That’s not to say I was a hermit (ha!). It’s just to say I was very reserved about conversing with strangers. If you weren’t a hot girl I hoped to add to my phone book, chances were good I wasn’t going to speak to you. A big part of this had to do with a caustic cocktail of paranoia and pessimism. It seemed dangerous to engage Read more
