r.i.p. DJ AM

Over the last decade, I’ve seen hundreds of DJs spin.  Most were okay.  Some were amazing.  Then, there’s Cash’s holy trinity of DJ sets.  Three sets I’ll never forget.  Sets that moved me.  That changed me, reminding me why I fell in love with electronic music in the first place.

1) Tiga (so underrated it’s retarded - Benassi, watch your back)
2) Deadmau5 birthday set @ Beta (epic songs spun by a true showman)
3) DJ AM, Skylab 2008 (simply.  beyond.  words.)

If these shows were ranked in order of fun, DJ AM would be at the top of the list.  He’d BE the list.  In the midst of one of the shittiest nights mother nature ever threw at a Colorado massive (ankle deep mud, icy cold, pouring rain) DJ AM dropped a nuclear bomb of bliss on the packed house of rolled out, sweat drenched revelers.

Showing off a talent for mash-up second only perhaps to Girl Talk, his set exploded with so much positive energy I get chills right now just thinking about it.  From Daft Punk to the Beastie Boys, to 80’s pop songs layered with fierce tech house, even, if memory serves Read more

Girl on cell phone:

“I’ve been looking for you for two god damned hours.  I spent a dollar calling the fucking jail.”

cologne: enough is too much

A lesson learned during my crazy days as an aspiring ‘pick up artist’ still applies.  One of the pick up ‘gurus’ used to say that when it comes to cologne, only you and your lover should be able to smell it.  Good advice.  The exact opposite of this concept?  One of the guys Read more

Every time I see some vapid, uppity tart strutting down the street in a ridiculous push-up bra, the smug smirk of breast-born-entitlement on her overly made up face, I think the same thing.

I was a rather uh, “odd” child.  Odd is perhaps too kind a term.  In addition to my unique fashion sense (cowboy boots with shorts and a tank top?  but of course), I had a lot of little quirks.  Most of these, I’ll take to my grave.  (You’re welcome, future psychiatrist.)  One of them though is having a profound effect lately, and deserves to be shared.

In my post about “the greatest drug in the history of the world“, I lamented my inability to stay in the present moment.  To savor it.  To devour its deliciousness whole.  Trying to shut off our memories and temporarily ignore the future is one of the most difficult things to do.  It’s also one of the most important.  When I was a kid, I used to play a little game with myself.  At the time, I did it for reasons unknown even to me.  (”You’re a weirdo, that’s why”) Now, I do it to force myself into Read more

The other day, a strange sign.  Sitting down at the back of the mall shuttle, a well dressed, somewhat thuggish looking fellow with clear eyes and a flashy smile speaks to me.  “New movies..”  He hands me a sheet of paper.  A handwritten list.  Of movies.  The Orphan.  The Hangover.  Harry Potter.  And on, and on, and on.  There must have been 50 titles.  Current features now playing at a cineplex near you.  I didn’t get it at first.  I looked at the list.  I looked at him.  Then I noticed it.  Read more

Facebook?  Myspace?  Twitter?  I’ve seen TGOC quoted on all three. Now, we’re setting our sites on the kitchen.  Nothing makes me happier than knowing the site is making a difference.  Reaching people.  Leaving a mark.  A recent email from a longtime reader Read more
